Avail

What is an Avail?

An Avail refers to an advertising opportunity within a video stream—a specific time slot designated for ad insertion during a Connected TV (CTV), Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST), or Ad-Supported Video on Demand (AVOD) viewing session. These avails represent predefined or dynamically determined points in the content where commercials can be delivered to viewers.

In streaming environments, avails serve as the inventory that advertisers buy and as the foundation of monetization for publishers. Each avail is a chance to deliver a targeted, revenue-generating message to a viewer on a large screen, making them one of the most valuable and measurable components of digital video advertising.

How do Avails work?

Avails are strategically positioned throughout streaming content to support ad-supported viewing experiences. These points can occur before the content starts (pre-roll), in the middle of the content (mid-roll), or after it ends (post-roll). The process begins when the video player or platform recognizes an upcoming ad opportunity. At that moment, an ad request is generated and sent to an Ad Decision Service (ADS) or ad server.

The ad request includes metadata about the viewer, the content, and the device—such as location, genre, time of day, and available ad inventory. The Ad Decision Service processes this information in real time, evaluates eligible campaigns, and selects the most suitable ad based on targeting parameters and business rules.

Once the ad is selected, it is dynamically inserted into the designated avail, either through server-side ad insertion (SSAI) or client-side methods. The ad is then displayed to the viewer in a seamless, TV-like experience, while impression data and performance metrics are tracked in the background.
Avails may vary in length and frequency depending on the platform’s monetization strategy and the viewer experience goals. In premium FAST environments, for example, avails are carefully managed to deliver high ad fill rates while minimizing viewer drop-off.

Why are Avails important?

Avails are the core unit of monetization in ad-supported streaming. Every avail represents a moment where content can be monetized, audience attention can be captured, and a brand message can be delivered.

For advertisers, avails are the tactical placement points where campaigns are activated. They enable precise targeting, campaign pacing, and audience segmentation. Advertisers depend on a consistent supply of avails to reach their performance goals and measure key metrics like impressions, viewability, and return on ad spend (ROAS).

For publishers and platforms, avails are the mechanism through which content is turned into revenue. Each filled avail represents an opportunity to increase yield, boost fill rates, and deepen advertiser relationships. Managing avails effectively—by optimizing ad load, timing, and viewer context—is critical to maximizing revenue without compromising user experience.

Understanding how avails function is essential for anyone involved in the business of streaming. Whether you’re selling inventory, buying media, or optimizing campaign performance, the availability, timing, and targeting of avails directly impact your success.
